February is the time of the year we celebrate Black History Month in North America. It is a time when we honor Black historians and help raise awareness of their contributions to today’s society. Toronto was the first city in Canada to recognize Black History Month in 1979, but it was not until 1995 that the House of Commons unanimously passed a motion to celebrate it in Ontario and the country. Every day for the month of February, Unifor Local 1285 will honor the contribution of a past or present African-Canadian in the world of education, politics, human rights, and entertainment. It is an excellent opportunity to observe the importance of the Black community in Canada.
