Unifor and CUPE Members rallied in support of Toyota workers’ drive to get a union

phoca_thumb_l_IMG_9087Workers from Unifor and CUPE joined together and rallied in support of a drive to organize Toyota workers at manufacturing plants in Woodstock and Cambridge. The Toyota workers within these plants have been leading the efforts and are on their way in gaining support for unionization.
A few Toyota workers themselves took the podium and spoke about personal reasons for wanting to organize together, and they outlined some of the main issues that have garnered support to bring “fairness and human rights” into the workplace.

Unifor Local 1285 hosts 19th Annual Members Only Hockey Tournament

phoca_thumb_l_IMG_8779Local members and their family joined executives for the 19th Annual Members Only Hockey Tournament on Feb 15, 2014 at Varsity Hockey Inc. in Brampton.

Two sets of three teams went head to head in 3-on-3 games in a round robin format, one in a competitive round and the other set in a non-competitive round.

The winners were decided by a final game and presented a trophy on behalf of the Local.

Farewell to retired CAW National President

Long-time serving CAW member, Ken Lewenza has retired as CAW National President after fighting for the working people for over 40 years.

A Roast & Toast Retirement Party was held in his honour as a charity fundraiser this past week.

“He’s definitely going to be missed for all his energy and good work,” says Leon Rideout, President of Unifor Local 1285 who has known Lewenza for over 20 years.

Unifor Local 1285 attend hockey night

phoca_thumb_l_dsc_0073_resizedUnifor Local 1285 executives, members and their families came out on Jan. 23, 2014 to the Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ont. to watch an exciting match of hockey between the Brampton Beast and Quad City Mallards.

Local 1285 and the Brampton Beast hockey team have partnered together on numerous occasions to give back to the Brampton community through various charitable activities. Tonight, Unifor 1285 sponsored the hockey game and also distributed toques to everyone in the symbolic Unifor red that had the local name and number embossed on it. Boomer, the mascot for the Brampton Beast, made his way around to the members and public as he entertained the crowds, posed for pictures and helped distribute Unifor toques.

Unifor Local 1285 kicks off “Rights at Work” campaign

phoca_thumb_l_dsc_0075_resizedIn opposition to current attacks targeting unions, Unifor executives, including the National President, came together with members and community leaders in the fifth stop on the nationwide “Rights at Work” tour.

“It was a great turnout,” said Local 1285 President, Leon Rideout. Other locals from the area came out to participate as well, filling the Union Hall.

They came rallying for support from not only current union members but all Canadian workers. With an expected spring election only months away, the tour aims to engage all workers in the fight to protect their rights.
